Our story

A foundation built on belief in people.

The Moses Mabhida Foundation is a community-rooted, purpose-driven non-profit organisation. It was the brainchild of four visionaries in 2010 and was officially registered as an NPO in 2012 by its founding mother, June-Rose Mabhida — but the work began long before, with conversations, compassion and a collective calling to respond to the needs of South Africa's most vulnerable people.

How we began

Our first seed funding came from the Department of Arts and Culture, which allowed us to open our initial office. The earliest programmes focused on the empowerment and protection of domestic violence survivors, anchored in two police stations in Mamelodi East and West.

Where we are today

Backed by the Department of Social Development, our main partner and continuous funder since 2012, we now operate across eight police stations and a Thuthuzela Care Centre within Mamelodi Regional Hospital. Our office on Tsweu Street runs a feeding programme serving over 100 beneficiaries twice a week.

Our team

Sixty-five staff members — social workers, outreach officers, support staff and leadership — unified by a shared purpose: to restore dignity, build resilience, and ignite hope in the lives of those we serve.

Our mission

To provide quality psychosocial support services, community development programmes, awareness campaigns and empowerment initiatives that restore dignity, promote social justice and improve the lives of vulnerable individuals and families.

Our vision

To build safe, empowered and self-sufficient communities free from violence, abuse, poverty and social injustice.

Preserving a legacy

The Foundation preserves the life and legacy of Moses Mabhida through educational programmes, research and documentation, public lectures and exhibitions, and community awareness initiatives.

Area of operation

The organisation operates in Gauteng and is Pretoria-based, with the ambition to extend our work to the rest of the country. We believe the need is greater than our current reach, and that expanding services and adding hands is imperative.

How we are governed

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors made up of seven non-executive directors and one chief executive officer, drawn from the public sector, civil society and business. The Board provides strategic guidance and oversight, ensures compliance with relevant legislation and partnership agreements, and safeguards sound financial management. It meets quarterly, and holds special meetings as required.

What drives us

We believe true empowerment comes from addressing systemic challenges such as Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, while actively promoting personal growth, economic empowerment and skills development.
